An oceanfront compound in East Hampton, NY, takes the mantle of most expensive new listing this week on realtor.com®. The $55 million vacation estate includes a main house and guest cottage on 6.7 prime acres.

It was built for James Evans, chairman of the board of Union Pacific, who died in 2015 at the age of 94. The property has remained in the Evans family since its construction in the 1980s.

His heirs don’t live in the area and have decided to let go of the compound. It consists of a main house on 5.4 acres and a separate guest cottage on 1.3 inland acres. The 5,500-square-foot main house and its acreage could be purchased separately for the lower price of $45 million, says listing agent Paul Brennan with Douglas Elliman.

Built in 1989, the five-bedroom, six-bathroom main house designed by architects Zwirko & Ortmann features oversize windows throughout to take full advantage of the natural surroundings.

The layout incorporates indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces, with options to eat and lounge outside, or gather around the formal dining table on cooler nights. There’s also an eat-in kitchen and a living room with floor-to-ceiling windows.
